Ugadi

Today is Ugadi

Ugadi is the new year for South India. Mainly for Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka. Other states have their own version of Ugadi staggered in next couple of weeks. It marks the seasonal changes and crop harvesting and begining of true summer.

Ugadi also brings back lot of childhood memories associated with foods, sweets, mangoes etc. Traditional people taste a goulash made of tender neem leaves or neem flowers, raw mangoe pulp and jaggery which represents mixture of positive and negative things of life. New calenders, traditional calenders called "Panchanga", and "Panchanga Parayana" that is recital of highlights of year prediction is also organized.

Traditional fares for Ugadi are: raw mangoe chitranna (a sort of pulav) where grated mangoe is mixed with rice with some spices added. Obbattu (in Kannada), a sweet roti, where the filling is made with cooked lentils and jaggery rolled with dough made from maida, the all purpose flour.

Today I made mango chitranna, bought Obbattu from the shop ( too less to make at home, I am not much of a sweet eater).

I wish you all a happy Ugadi. May this new year bring you prosperity, peace and joy.
